The market’s main event was the election, even if the result may not be known for days or weeks as officials count all the votes. Such uncertainty could upset markets, along with an upcoming meeting by the Federal Reserve on interest rates later this week. The widespread expectation is for it to cut its main interest rate for a second straight time.

"None of the threats have been determined to be credible thus far," the FBI said in a statement, adding that election integrity was among the bureau's highest priorities.

Two polling sites in Fulton County, Georgia, were temporarily evacuated following hoax bomb threats. Both locations reopened after about 30 minutes, with officials stating that the county is pursuing a court order to extend voting hours beyond the statewide 7 p.m. deadline.

Georgia's Republican Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, attributed the Election Day bomb threats to Russian interference.
