The New York Times released its annual list of 50 best restaurants in America for 2024, and one Phoenix restaurant, Mr. Baan’s Bar and Mookata, made the cut.
The list was compiled by The New York Times’ writers and editors over the last year, as they traveled around the country eating their way through all sorts of regional and hyperlocal cuisines.
Mr. Baan’s Bar and Mookata, a Thai restaurant from the owners of Lom Wong, has been open for less than a year in downtown Phoenix, but already caught the eye of The New York Times staffer Brian Gallagher, who wrote: “Three things to know: You will need an appetite. You will be better off with a big group. And you will want cocktails.”

Mookata translates to “pork on a grill” in Thai and features a domed grill for DIY barbecued meat, surrounded by a “moat” of broth. Mr. Baan’s is one of only three mookata-style restaurants in the U.S.
The cocktail menu pays tribute to Thailand with drinks like the Khao Soi Cowboy made with tequila, lime, pineapple, salted coconut, curry cordial and ka-pi and the Mon Dahm made with vodka, house-made bloody mix, squid ink, lime and Thai chili tincture.
