The iconic metro Phoenix cactus shaped like a dinosaur is now headless.
Reddit users reported that the unusually shaped cactus, which is located just off a popular hiking trail in the Superstition Mountains outside metro Phoenix, lost a key piece of its shape this summer. The dinosaur’s “head,” if you will, fell off, likely due to weather or age.
Images of the unique cactus have circulated online and on social media for quite a while, each time eliciting curious comments.
Here’s what to know about the T. rex cactus and what happened to it.
What is the T-rex cactus and what happened to it?
The T. rex cactus in Arizona’s Superstition Mountains is a cactus that happens to look like a dinosaur. Two of the cactus’ large arms grow downward for the creature’s legs, and the two arms at the top veer out at a 90-degree angle to form its mouth. Add the small T. rex-like arms in the middle, and the cactus really does start to look like a dinosaur.
However, a recent post from a Reddit user indicated the dinosaur-shaped cactus’ “head” had fallen off, possibly due to weather or age. The Reddit user noted that other hikers had spelled RIP with rocks near the cactus.
Where was the T-rex cactus located?
Those interested in spotting the T. rex cactus can take Jacob’s Crosscut Trail #58, which also leads to the Broadway Cave, from the Broadway Trailhead in the Superstition Mountains. The cactus stands just off the trail, less than a mile from the trailhead.

Why you should still take this hike?
While some Reddit users lamented the loss of the T. rex cactus, others were quick to point out that the hike is still worth taking. The hike along Jacob’s Crosscut Trail leads to the Broadway Cave, which is known for its stunning views of metro Phoenix.

While the T. rex cactus may have lost a key piece of its iconic shape, there are other unusual cactuses in Arizona worth checking out.
