When Will We Know Who Won?

Unless you live under a rock, you will be well aware the US election has kicked off, with presidential hopefuls Kamala Harris and Donald Trump campaigning for votes across America. Although early voting is already open, the official election day is November 5, which will extend into November 6 for us in Australia.

Nevertheless, people are already keen to know who is going to win the tight—and historic—2024 election. Ahead of the official announcement, here’s your basic guide to the US election and when we’ll know who won.

When Is The US Election 2024?

Americans head to the polls on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
For those of us following along in Australia, the time difference means we’ll be following along on Wednesday, November 6.

When Will The US Election Results Be Announced?

While sometimes Presidential elections are called the day-of voting, in 2024, the race is very, very close, leading analysts to predict it could take a while to count (and possibly recount) the votes.

A bit of American voting 101: Polls close on Election Day at 7pm local time across the United States. Given the nation’s many time differences, some states will wrap-up while others are still open. Meanwhile, there’s an extended deadline for mail voting in some states. While states like Arizona and Colorado request that mail votes be received by 7pm on Election Day, California accepts votes postmarked by election day for up to seven days after the election. For other states, this is three days, for others its 14. (You can get a full rundown of mail voting here.)

The New York Times explains that an increase in mail voting, which is more difficult to count, can delay results. Another possible reason for any delay for the official winner announcement is that the race is simply too close to call.

Although an exact date for US election results will not be clear, it could be one to several days after November 5.

In 2020, the election took place on Tuesday, November 3, with major media calling the race for Biden on Saturday, November 7.

The next President of the United States will be sworn in at their official inauguration set to take place on January 20, 2025.

Who Is Winning The US Election Now?

As of October 28, some polls have the results tied, while others have Kamala Harris leading by a very small margin. It’s going to be tight, so strap in!
