Arizona is a fast-growing state. Here’s what to know
Arizona may not be one of the oldest states, but it still has a long history. Here’s what to know about the 48th state in the nation.
The Republic
At nearly 114,000 square miles, the Grand Canyon state is bigger than most. Arizona is the sixth-largest state in the U.S., topped only by Alaska, Texas, California, Montana and New Mexico.
It is home to 7.4 million people, the fifth-biggest city in the United States and several landmarks that draw tourists from all over the world each year.
Though the center of the state politically and population-wise may be metro Phoenix, the true geographic center is in a remote wilderness area north of the Valley.
Here’s what to know about the center of Arizona, how it was determined and how to find it.
What is the center of Arizona?
Camp Verde holds the distinction of being the municipality closest to the geographic center of the state.
The Arizona Professional Land Surveyors Association made the ruling in 2012 as part of the Grand Canyon State’s centennial celebrations, according to the League of Arizona Cities and Towns.
The sign marking the designation, located in Rezzonico Park in Camp Verde, is shaped like a map of Arizona and its major landmarks with a special marker for the center. However, the plaque also notes that it isn’t the true center of the state, giving coordinates for the geographic center.
What is really the center of Arizona?
Even though the marker for Arizona’s center is in Camp Verde, the real center of the Grand Canyon State is a bit more remote.
The geographic center of the state is in the Mazatzal Wildnerness near the confluence of the Verde and East Verde rivers.
The United States Geological Survey lists the center as 55 miles east-southeast of Prescott, though it notes that “the positions listed should be considered approximations.”
The geographic coordinates, according to the plaque in Camp Verde, are 34°16’31.1″N, 111°39’36.8″ W.
