Kam Shanks, a receiver who signed to play football at Arkansas on Tuesday, was named a first-team All-America punt return specialist by The Sporting News.
Shanks, 5-8 and 180 pounds, led the nation in punt return yards (329), punt return average (20.6 yards) and punt return touchdowns (2) at Alabama-Birmingham this season.
He is a finalist for the Jet Award, which honors the most outstanding return specialist in college football.
Shanks set the single-game program record with 139 punt return yards during a 59-21 win over Tulsa on Nov. 2. He returned a punt for a touchdown during that game, as well as during the Blazers’ season-opening 41-3 victory over Alcorn State.
Shanks also had 5 receptions for 153 yards and 3 touchdowns along with 2 carries for 19 yards against the Golden Hurricanes for a total of 311 all-purpose yards.
Shanks had 62 receptions for 656 yards and 5 touchdowns this season, including 5 for 31 yards and a 15-yard touchdown during a 37-27 loss at Arkansas on Sept. 14. The receptions total tied him for the fourth most in a single season at UAB.
