Benton County Master Gardeners

Benton County Master Gardeners will meet at 6 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Bentonville Church of Christ located at 816 N.W. Eighth Street in Bentonville. Meetings feature speakers discussing garden topics and are open to the public.

Master Gardeners are volunteers who are trained in horticulture and share their training by participating in community projects including a vegetable garden that benefits the Helping Hands Food Pantry. Information: bentoncountymastergardeners.com.

Bella Vista Civil War Round Table

The Bella Vista Civil War Round Table will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Bella Vista Historical Museum located at 1885 Bella Vista Way.

Russell Pennington of Rogers will discuss the "Camden Expedition," which was part of the 1864 Red River Campaign. The talk will detail General Frederick Steele's march from Little Rock to Camden, Arkansas in an effort to link up with General Nathaniel Banks army near Shreveport, La. and the Confederate efforts to counter him.

The Bella Vista Civil War Round Table's mission is to educate the public and stimulate interest in the period of history of the United State known as "The American Civil War" and to promote historical and educational studies related to the period.

Programs are free but donations are accepted to defray the cost of the speakers.

MOAA

The Northwest Arkansas Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will host a meet-and-greet breakfast for current, former and retired commissioned and warrant officers of the uniformed services beginning at 9 a.m. Nov. 9 at the Golden Corral in Fayetteville located at 4507 N. College Ave. The breakfast is complimentary for prospective members.

Guests are invited to join the group for fellowship, local networking and to learn about one of the fastest growing and most active MOAA Chapters in the nation. The chapter's community service activities include a one-of-a-kind mentorship program with Army and Air Force ROTC cadets at the University of Arkansas, active support to Bentonville High Schools Navy JROTC program, a U.S. Flag education program for all 5th graders in the area for more than 3,000 students, Veterans and family member scholarships, expansion of the National Cemetery, food drives for the Veteran and Military-Affiliated Student Center at UA and advocacy for pro-military and family legislation at federal and state levels. Camaraderie and friendship among fellow officers and spouses is a priority of the group.

All who are eligible for MOAA membership are encouraged to come to the breakfast. Membership in MOAA is open to active duty, former and retired commissioned and warrant officers of the U.S. Armed Forces as well as the Public Health Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Northwest Arkansas Handweavers Guild

The Northwest Arkansas Handweavers Guild will meet at 10 a.m. Nov. 9 at the main exhibit building at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History located at 118 W. Johnson Ave. in Springdale. This location is different than the guild's usual meeting place. Show and share and the program begin the meeting with a business meeting to follow.

The program will be "Waulking the Wool." Waulking, also known as fulling, is the process where woolen cloth is beaten to make it thicker and water resistant. Fulling mills were introduced in medieval times but in many more remote and self-sufficient areas of Scotland, the process continued to be done by hand into the 20th century. For the women who took part, waulking was an enjoyable social occasion, with plenty of fun and gossip as well as hard work. Women used rhythmic songs to help them in their work and to pass the time more enjoyably. Come experience Northwest Arkansas Waulking the Wool with Eddon and learn more about this ancient tradition.
