During the Democratic National Convention (DNC) last week, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, was one of the handful of Republicans, at the event.
In an interview with Fox News, Hutchinson said he was not at the event to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris. However, he said he still believes Donald Trump should not be the next president and the Republicans need to move on from the former president.
“We need to define it [the Republican Party] differently than Donald Trump and the rule of law is important to me. I said on the debate stage I’m not going to vote for a convicted felon. That still holds true,” Hutchinson said.
For Harris to win the election, Hutchinson said she will need support from Republicans, who are wanting to move on from Trump. He said for Harris to gain the support of this group, she will need to prove her economic policy is not extreme.
“She needs to make clear that when she talks about her economic policy it’s a fight against price gouging, which attorneys general do all across America, and not price controls. She needs to make that clear either in her convention speech or elsewhere,” Hutchinson said.
Hutchinson was one of the Republicans who challenged Trump for the Republican nomination for president, but ended his campaign after the Iowa Caucuses. Hutchinson said he is still deciding if he will continue his political career. Currently, Hutchinson is a political analyst for media outlets and that was his reason for being at the DNC. Starting next year, he will be a faculty member at the University of Arkansas law school.
In addition to Hutchinson, other Republicans at the DNC included: Adam Kinzinger, former Republican Congressman; John Giles, former mayor of Mesa, Arizona; and Olivia Troye, a former official for the Trump Administration.
