Lafe native artist Russell Butler, a.k.a. buZ blurr, died on Jan. 26 at the age of 80.
In his memory, Little Rock photographer (and White Water Tavern music booker) Matt White has released a set of six original postcards bearing gorgeous images of blurr and “Colossus of Roads,” the iconic train art he was best known for. Arkansas Times writer Tav Falco described the continent-traveling drawing as a “heroic, minimal line rendering of a trainman’s profile wearing a 10-gallon hat while riding in the wind, trailing smoke from a pipe stuck in the corner of his mouth.” According to the Oxford American, blurr “adorned tens of thousands of railcars across North America” with the sketch.
Here are few words from White about the project, posted on Instagram:
I am honored to release a new set of original postcards in tribute to my late friend and artistic hero, buZ blurr, that blue-collar avant-garde inspirator of the global underground who left the physical realm in January, but whose work and spirit continues to burn and inspire. I put immense love and work into these mailings, each of which consists of two copies of six photographs I had the privilege of making with buZ on one side, fragments of his astounding writing on the other, and more surprises within. In addition to his infamous Colossus of Roads train art and the countless other mediums in which he created, buZ was one of the world’s greatest and most prolific mail artists, an endeavor he began by mailing out Robert Frank postcards in 1972. In such spirit, I hope this effort is a fitting tribute.
To purchase a set for yourself, send $10 (or $20, if you’re outside of the United States) and your address to @Matt-White-275 on Venmo or @mattwhitephotography on PayPal. Any profits will be donated to blurr’s estate.
