POP NOTES | OPINION: Elvis Costello’s ‘King of America’ album gets boxed set re-release

Elvis Costello’s 1986 album “King of America,” one of my favorite records ever, has been re-released in a six-CD boxed set version. “King of America and Other Realms,”offers a comprehensive look not only at at the album’s making, but its aftermath and lasting influence.

The basic components of the boxed set are the CDs. The first disc consists of a remastered version of “King of America,” the album Costello recorded with producer T Bone Burnett and a host of session musicians, including members of Elvis Presley’s TCB band. Instead of working exclusively with his usual band the Attractions, “King of America” saw Costello working mainly with a group he called The Confederates, which included guitarist James Burton, bassist Jerry Scheff, and drummer Ronnie Tutt to bring an authentic American sound to the record.
