South Arkansas lands $17.5 million for high-speed Internet project

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Wednesday (Dec. 18) more than $313 million in funding to connect rural residents, farmers and business owners in 18 states to reliable high-speed internet.

A $17.5 million high-speed internet network will be developed across six counties in south Arkansas as part of the announcement. A timeframe for the this project was not released.

This rural development investment in Arkansas will be used to develop a fiber-to-the-premises network for high-speed internet. This network will benefit 3,974 people, 56 businesses, 88 farms and six educational facilities in Cleveland, Bradley, Drew, Grant, Jefferson and Lincoln counties in Arkansas.

Projects are being financed by the fifth round of the ReConnect Program and are a central part of President Joe Biden’s Investing in America agenda to rebuild the economy.

“Keeping the people of rural America connected with good, reliable high-speed internet brings new and innovative ideas to the rest of our country and creates good-paying jobs,” said Vilsack. “That’s why USDA’s ReConnect Program is an important part of our partnership with rural communities. Through these investments, we are connecting the most rural and remote communities to a global marketplace and bringing new opportunities within reach.”
