Technicality may jeopardize Arkansas electors in presidential vote

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — The job of certifying the United States presidential election is left to the United States Electoral College.

But this year’s slate of electors from Arkansas could face a challenge.

At issue is a document certifying the six electors who would cast their votes for Donald Trump in the electoral college, if Trump wins the popular vote in Arkansas this November.

Some fear a technicality could open the door for those Republican electors to be challenged.

The chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party Convention, and the convention secretary are both required to sign the certificate of electors and file it with the Secretary of State within two days of the convention coming to an end.

But while Republican Party Chairman, Joseph Wood signed the document, convention chair Jennifer Lancaster did not.

Delegate of the Arkansas Republican Convention, Elizabeth Sotallaro says, “The Republican Party of Arkansas decided to send in a document certifying our presidential electors. They put their own signatures on there. That document should be signed by the convention chairman and the convention secretary, not by the chairman and the secretary of the party.”

She says that because the RPA had the wrong people sign the Certificate of Electors, it puts those electors at risk of being challenged by Democrats.

Now, she wants the leaders of her party held accountable.

“Truth and transparency at this point,” says Sotallaro. “The truth is that they have done something that has put our presidential electors in jeopardy by signing documents that they had no business signing.”

A dispute within the party is apparently to blame.

Sotallaro claims some GOP leaders have refused to speak to the convention chair or the convention secretary since the convention.

“We’ve never even seen on the convention side of things, never seen the complaints that were made, we’ve never seen this opinion that they went by, we’ve never seen any paperwork of any votes that they made. They won’t talk to anybody. The only way to fix this is for Joseph Wood who signed that paperwork to rescind that advisory opinion and pull it all back. Then, we can take care of what we need to do and continue on with business.”

The lack of communication could result in a major problem for the state of Arkansas and voters.
