Texas football among best SEC teams ahead of Arkansas trip

The American-Statesman discusses if Texas is now the team to beat in the SEC, traveling to Fayetteville and basketball players to keep an eye on.

Texas football’s move to the Southeastern Conference will reignite an old rivalry.

The No. 3 Longhorns (8-1, 4-1 SEC) will take on Arkansas (5-4, 3-3) for the first time since 2021 and just the fourth time in 20 years when the teams square off Saturday at 11 a.m. CT at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

This will mark the first conference matchup between the programs in 33 years. Both played in the Southwest Conference from 1915 to 1991. The series has not been a regular on the schedule since the Razorbacks left for the SEC.

The Longhorns are coming off an impressive 49-17 win over a depleted Florida team in Austin last week, while the Razorbacks are coming off a 63-31 loss to No. 11 Ole Miss on Nov. 2 in Week 10 – the last time they played. Arkansas was on bye last week.

Here’s a look at the series history between Texas football and Arkansas:

Texas-Arkansas football history

Saturday will mark the 80th matchup between the Longhorns and the Razorbacks. However, Texas and Arkansas have only played four times in the past 20 years. The two were longtime foes in the old Southwest Conference from 1915 to 1991.

The discrepancy in the record is primarily reflected by Texas’ dominance early on. The Longhorns won the first 14 matchups between the two programs and then 12 in a row between 1939 and 1950. Those two dominant stretches account for 26 of the 56 wins in the series for the Longhorns.

Then-No. 8 Arkansas defeated No. 1 Texas 14-13 on Oct. 17, 1964, in Austin en route to a national championship. On Dec. 6, 1969, No. 1 Texas defeated No. 2 Arkansas 15-14 in what was deemed “the game of the century” en route to the national championship for the Longhorns. President Richard Nixon was in attendance for that game.

The first matchup between Texas and Arkansas was on Nov. 29, 1894, with the Longhorns winning 54-0 in Austin. Texas won the first 14 meetings of the series. Arkansas finally got on the board with a 20-6 win in Austin on Nov. 24, 1933.

However, Arkansas has won two straight over Texas and five of the last seven matchups between the programs since 1991.

Arkansas has won both bowl games against Texas. On Jan. 1, 2000, the Longhorns defeated Arkansas 27-6 in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Arkansas also pulled out a 31-7 win over Texas on Dec. 29, 2014, in the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl in Houston.
