Trump meets Zelenskyy after complaining he ‘refuses’ to do deal to end war
Donald Trump has met Volodymyr Zelenskyy face to face after complaining that the Ukrainian leader was “refusing” to do a deal to end the war with Russia.
As he stood next to Mr Zelenskyy at Trump Tower in New York, the Republican presidential candidate said he would work with both countries to end the conflict.
Following days of questions over whether the pair would sit down together, Mr Trump praised the Ukrainian president, saying he had a “very good relationship” with him, but added he also had a “very good relationship” with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
During their first meeting since 2019, Mr Zelenskyy said he hoped they would continue to have a good relationship. “It takes two to tango, and we will,” Mr Trump responded.
Mr Trump was asked by a reporter if Ukraine could win the war, to which he replied: “Sure. They could.”
Mr Zelenskyy said: “I think we have a common view that the war in Ukraine has to be stopped and Putin can’t win.”
Harris visits Mexican border
Kamala Harris spent part of the day visiting the US-Mexico border in Arizona, where she called for further tightening of asylum restrictions.
The Democratic presidential candidate’s push to further restrict asylum claims moves beyond President Joe Biden’s policy on an issue where Mr Trump has an edge with voters.
Immigration and border security are top issues in Arizona, the only battleground state that borders Mexico and one that contended with a record influx of asylum seekers last year.
She used her remarks to challenge Mr Trump’s own record on migration during his presidency, saying he did nothing to fix the legal immigration system.
“Donald Trump tanked it,” she said.
“He prefers to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem. And the American people deserve a president who cares more about border security than playing political games and their personal political future.”
Robert F Kennedy Jr loses fight to appear on New York ballot
The US Supreme Court
rejected a bid by Robert F Kennedy Jr to restore his
name to the ballot in New York state after he suspended
his presidential campaign in August.
The justices denied a request by Kennedy’s campaign and
other allies ordering New York election officials to reinstate
his name on the ballot.
When Mr Kennedy suspended his campaign and endorsed Mr Trump, he pledged to withdraw
in the most closely contested states but remain on the ballot
elsewhere.
Mr Kennedy has since urged his supporters everywhere to
back Mr Trump and has withdrawn from the ballot in a number of
Republican-leaning states.
His fight to stay on the ballot in Democratic-leaning New
York emerged after a state judge ruled in favour of a challenge
by individual voters who claimed Mr Kennedy deceptively provided a
false New York residence on his petition to get on the ballot.
The judge agreed, calling it a “sham” address that he used
“for the purpose of maintaining his voter registration and
furthering his own political aspirations in this state.”
