US President Joe Biden has left Washington for what are likely to be the final major summits of his term. He is heading to South America for meetings with world leaders, including those from China and Japan.
Biden’s first stop is in Peru to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. He then travels to Brazil for a meeting of the Group of 20 nations.
Officials say he will sit down with Chinese President Xi Jinping for their first in-person meeting in about a year.
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the talks will be “an opportunity to ensure a smooth transition” to the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump, as well as a chance “to continue to keep those channels of communication” open.
Biden is scheduled to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol.
Sullivan said the three will “discuss the importance of institutionalizing the progress” they have made together “so that it carries forward through the transition” to Trump’s presidency.
The G20 leaders are set to discuss a variety of shared challenges, including poverty, climate change and major geopolitical issues such as Ukraine and the Middle East.
