HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — The Blue Star Mothers of Coastal Carolina is asking for donations as a deadline nears in efforts to place wreaths on the gravesites of fallen veterans.
The goal of the Wreaths Across America program is to decorate the graves at Florence National Cemetery, where roughly 15,000 veterans are buried.
President Carol Dion said thee goal is to get to 13,000 wreaths, but so far they have only gotten about 6,000.
“You know, they signed on the dotted line and were willing to give their lives for us,” Dion said. “Can’t we just at least acknowledge their existence one day a year on Wreaths Across America day?”
Last year, the group was able to place a wreath on every grave. Dion said she knows many donations have gone to help victims of Hurricane Helene but hopes people can still consider honoring a fallen veteran.
“There’s so many of them that are buried in Florence that have no family left or their family isn’t even from around here anymore, and they don’t go, so they are forgotten,” Dion said. “So by us going year after year, placing that wreath, those people are not forgotten.”
Dion said they will place the wreaths at the ceremony on Dec. 14. Cash or check donations are need by Monday. Credit and debit donations must be in by Dec. 2. A wreath is only $17. You can donate, here.
