On the final day of voting in the American presidential election, Newstalk speaks to people from both sides to see what their biggest election issues are.
On a special election episode of The Hard Shoulder, coming to listeners live from the Fitzpatrick Manhattan Hotel in New York City throughout the week, presenter Kieran Cuddihy spoke to Newstalk chief reporter Barry Whyte who is keeping up with opinions at polls across in Berkeley, California.

Polling stations across the state opened at 7am and Barry said that so far “they haven’t been that busy”.
“Up until yesterday, over 6 million people had already voted in California,” he said.
“That is nearly 34% of the total voters turnout in 2020 here.
“I saw lots of people yesterday dropping off their ballots at the official 24-hour ballot drop boxes.
“In northern Berkeley, where Kamala Harris is from, there were queues of people [at drop off boxes] when I was there yesterday.
“So there was people getting their votes in early and even last night, when I was on the University of California campus that is here in Berkeley, there were queues of young people there dropping in their ballots as well.”

The University of California is one of the biggest universities in the United States, with over 47,000 students in attendance.
Barry spoke to a few students on the university campus who were voting for the first time and who voted for Kamala Harris.
“I think her views aligned the most like with my own like political views and so I think her political standpoint aligns better than the other options,” one female student said.
Another student said she thinks another Donald Trump presidency will “limit more human rights” and limit what they are “able to do with [their] policies”.
The two students both said the election was “neck in neck”.
“Honestly, I’m a little scared because I feel it’s going to be like a pretty tight election, but I’m gonna have hope,” one student said.
More American Presidential Election coverage to come throughout this week.
