Biggest sanctuary cities brace for Trump deportations

Los Angeles and New York have taken different approaches to sanctuary city status as Trump’s second term approaches.

President-elect Donald Trump said he plans to end birthright citizenship on day one of his second term during an interview with “Meet the Press” Sunday.

During Sunday’s interview, Trump said that “if we can,” he would use executive action to end the method of citizenship. However, critics say that doing so would violate the 14th Amendment and instead requires a constitutional amendment, USA TODAY reported — a process purposefully “quite onerous,” according to the White House.

It’s not the first time Trump has discussed ending birthright citizenship. Through an executive order, he plans to “stop federal agencies from granting automatic U.S. citizenship to the children of illegal aliens” and “direct federal agencies” to require at least one parent to be an American citizen or lawful permanent resident for their future children to gain citizenship by birth, according to his administration’s policy plans in Agenda47.

What is birthright citizenship?

Birthright citizenship is being granted citizenship to a country upon your birth. Section 1 of the 14th Amendment states that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

A person who wasn’t born an American citizen can apply to become one through naturalization, depending on if they meet specific criteria such as being a permanent resident.

Which countries have birthright citizenship?

More than 30 other countries provide citizenship to those born there, according to Al Jazeera and nonpartisan fact-checking website PolitiFact. This includes countries in Central and South America, such as Costa Rica, Ecuador and Argentina, and America’s northern neighbor, Canada, according to Al Jazeera.
