Preventing vehicle theft, burglaries

Police in Ventura County offer advice on how to avoid vehicle theft and burglary.

Irvine is the safest city in California, according to a new WalletHub list.

No other city in the state did as well as Irvine, ranked No. 11 among 182 American communities listed in order of safety.

Known for its safe roads and low pedestrian fatality rate, South Burlington, Vermont, topped the national list, according to WalletHub, a personal finance company. South Burlington was followed by Casper, Wyoming; Warwick, Rhode Island; Burlington, Vermont; and Boise, Idaho.

In addition to Irvine, three California cities on the list were among the 25 safest in the nation: Chula Vista, No. 23; Fremont, No. 24; and Glendale, No. 25.

The least safe California city, according to the WalletHub list, is Oakland, No. 175.

Cities were judged on data varying from traffic fatalities and assaults to unemployment rate and the percentage of population that was uninsured, WalletHub reported. Natural disaster risk, home and community safety, and financial safety were considered.

Data came in August from the FBI, U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
