Dr. Dre performed with Snoop Dogg at the Closing Ceremony that brought the 2024 Olympics to an end on Sunday, but the hip-hop legend says he could be involved in the competition in a fairly unexpected capacity when it heads to Los Angeles if he’s able to fulfill his goal of making Team USA’s archery team.
The hip-hop community was well-represented at the Paris Olympics courtesy of Snoop Dogg and Flava Flav, who garnered plenty of attention while respectively serving as a correspondent for NBC and an ambassador for America’s women’s water polo team.
The Doggfather was also tapped to perform at the Closing Ceremony after heading back to California, and it’s only natural that he had Dr. Dre join him on stage in Los Angeles to perform “The Next Episode” as the city gears up to host the Olympics in 2028.
It wouldn’t be a stretch to assume Dr. Dre will be invited to contribute to the festivities when America hosts the summer version of the international showcase for the first time since it was held in Atlanta in 1996, as the Compton native arguably created the sound that defined the West Coast rap scene that exploded at the start of that decade.
However, it sounds like he’d prefer to participate as an athlete if the opportunity presents itself.
Dre sat down for an interview with Entertainment Tonight in the wake of his appearance at the Closing Ceremony during a conversation where he said he was seriously entertaining the idea of trying to qualify for the archery team that will represent the United States in L.A. in 2028.
He explained why he thinks he genuinely has a shot, saying:
“I’m trying to try out for the Olympics in 2028. I’m really good at archery…
I’m dead-a– serious. I actually started playing around with archery when I was in junior high. I stopped for a while and my son bought me a set-up in my backyard.
I heard that qualifying for the Olympics is 77 feet, and I practice at 90.”
Dr. Dre will be 63 years old when the 2028 Olympics get underway, but it is worth noting Thomas Scott, the oldest archer to ever compete at the Olympics, was 71 years old (although it’s worth noting that mark was set all the way back in 1904).
It seems unlikely he’ll be representing Team USA when everything is said and done, but crazier things have happened.
