The biggest (drive-thru) holiday lights display in the Coachella Valley is now open, so if you’re planning to go, put these five things on your list
Ah, yes. California, home of impressive ocean views and two of the best ice skating rinks nationwide — wait, the best nationwide?
Two ice skating rinks several hundred miles apart were named a USA TODAY 10Best destination for ice skating. Experts nominated places for ice skating that readers voted on, revealing where people favor when it’s time to lace up their skates.
Places in Ohio, Minnesota, and New York all made the cut. California’s first destination to make the list is Skating by the Sea at Hotel del Coronado at No. 8.
Open through Jan. 5, the beachfront ice rink boasts “stunning views of the Pacific Ocean” that visitors can make an experience out of by spending time at the Frostbite Lounge, which offers seating, fire pits, holiday-themed drinks and more. Hotel del Coronado, established in the 19th century, is in Coronado across the San Diego Bay.
Ice skating meets the big city with the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square. The outdoor skating rink in downtown San Francisco, ranked No. 6, returned for the season and is open through Jan. 20. Events, like Drag on Ice, where drag performers entertain while on the ice, and themed nights keep things interesting at this seasonal ice rink.

The Rink at Campus Martius Park in Detroit nabbed the No. 1 spot on 10Best’s list.
Mission Inn’s Festival of Lights and other holiday attractions to visit in 2024
The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa’s Festival of Lights in Riverside was named a USA TODAY 10Best destination for best public holiday lights in America. The Festival of Lights, which kicked off in November and will continue through early January, transforms the historic hotel’s exterior into a glittering, festive show of over ten million lights, according to the hotel.
WildLights at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Palm Desert was also selected as among the Best Zoo Lights in the nation by USA TODAY 10Best. Visitors at the Coachella Valley Zoo experience more than three million lights and synchronized displays through the end of December.
