New cars in California could alert drivers for breaking the speed limit
California could eventually join the European Union in requiring all new cars to alert drivers when they break the speed limit, a proposal aimed at reducing traffic deaths that would likely impact motorists across the country should it become law. Democratic San Francisco Senator Scott Wiener authored Senate Bill 961, which narrowly passed yesterday and now is waiting for Governor Newsom’s approval. The federal government sets safety standards for vehicles nationwide, which is why most cars now beep at drivers if their seat belt isn’t fastened. This bill would go further by requiring all new cars sold in the state by 2030 to beep at drivers when they exceed the speed limit by at least 10 mph (16 kph). The prevalence of deepfake nudes amongst teens and young adults
Deepfake nudes, where someone digitally de-clothes a publicly available image, have gained notoriety and prevalence amongst teens and adults. The creating and sharing of nonconsensual sexual images has been around since the internet began, but with new tools like AI, the barrier to create such images has lowered. What may be more concerning, though, is the normalization of sharing nonconsensual explicit material, as a recent survey by the tech company Thorn found that 31 percent of 13 to 17 year-olds agreed that it was normal to share nudes amongst themselves. Today on AirTalk, we discuss how common deepfake nudes and what you can do to protect yourself from nonconsensual images being shared with Elissa Redmiles, assistant professor of computer science at Georgetown University and Rebecca Delfino, professor of law at Loyola Law School. We also want to hear from you! If you have had an explicit image shared of yourself without permission, tell us how it affected you. How did you go about trying to take it down? LA County’s DA race & enhancement policies serve as the subject of new Imperfect Paradise season
Following a primary election that saw no candidate take the majority of votes in the Los Angeles County district attorney’s race, LAist Studios looks to shed light on the two candidates in this year’s runoff election. Although incumbent district attorney George Gascón has the benefit of holding the position, it comes at a time following failed recall campaigns and policies that have come under scrutiny by those seeking traditional stances on crime and punishment. Nathan Hochman, who’s challenging Gascón, has leaned into the criticism of the current district attorney’s approach, at a time that highly publicized crimes have made some voters believe the current system isn’t tough enough on crime. Through interviews with the candidates, as well as those impacted by previous and existing policies, this season of LAist Studios’ Imperfect Paradise digs into this referendum on existing sentencing policies. Joining us to discuss “Imperfect Paradise: District Attorney Gascón” is its lead reporter, civics and democracy correspondent for LAistFrank Stoltze.
Episode 1 of “District Attorney Gascón” is now available, listen here.

What is the Latino vote? And how should politicians approach getting it?
The Latino population is the second largest voting group in the country with over 60 million Latinos in the United States. Taking up such a large voting block, it’s no wonder why both Republicans and Democrats have tried in the last few years to gain a foothold with Latino voters, but neither side has been very successful in their efforts. In his new book The Latino Century: How America’s Largest Minority Is Transforming Democracy, Mike Madrid offers statistical analysis as to why politicians have been missing the mark when it comes to getting the Latino vote and how they can better serve Latino voters in the future. Many politicians have mistakenly characterized Latinos as an aggrieved minority, concerned with immigration. However, Madrid points out that the top priority for most Latinos is the economy, and that many Latino Americans are not immigrants and don’t even speak Spanish.
Today on AirTalk, Madrid, who’s a Republican political consultant and co-founder of the Lincoln Project, joins to talk about his new book and break down the complexities of the United State’s Latino voter population.
