A former Gold Rush town northeast of Sacramento was named one of the best small towns in America in 2025. It was the only town in California to make the list.
Country Living selected 10 destinations in California, Georgia, Oregon, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Texas, South Carolina, Ohio, Maryland and New Hampshire for its list, resulting from research and travel.
Best small towns in America include this Nevada County town, says Country Living
Nevada City is one of the country’s best small towns for 2025, according to Country Living.
More than an hour northeast of Sacramento and near the Tahoe National Forest, Nevada City is home to over 3,000 people, according to countywide statistics. The city developed along the banks of Deer Creek in 1849 after gold was discovered there, and by 1850, according to the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, there were 10,000 people in the town.
“Though the Bay Area so often steals the NorCal spotlight, travel 150 miles inland, and you’ll uncover the unique, less-frequented attractions of Nevada City,” according to Country Living.
Country Living highlighted Nevada City’s offerings, including its historic downtown and Victorian buildings, its proximity to the Tahoe National Forest and rivers that offer visitors plenty of outdoor adventures, and its June film festival, the Nevada City Film Festival.
Historic points of interest in Nevada City include Firehouse No. 1, which was built in 1861 and is now a museum, and the National Exchange Hotel, which was opened in 1856, according to the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce and the hotel.
