Seven California cities were ranked among the most infested with rats and mice in the U.S. last year, according to a recent report.

The analysis by pest control company Terminix examined data from 300 of the company’s branches across the nation, ranking them by the amount of rodent control services used by residents, representatives said.

Which California cities made the list?

Seven California cities or regions were among the 50 most-infested states in the nation, according to Terminex. They include:

2. San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose area3. Los Angeles12. Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto area25. Palm Springs29. San Diego43. Fresno-Visalia area45. Monterey-Salinas area

Small droppings, particularly in the backs of drawers and cabinets or on the floor along walls, may signify rats or mice, along with holes gnaw marks in food packaging or chewed wires or floor molding, Terminix representatives said.

Footprints and tail drags may be visible in dust, and homeowners should also keep an eye out for nesting debris such as chewed paper, cardboard or insulation.

The deer mouse, also known as a white-footed mouse, is the most abundant mammal in North America, according to the California Integrated Pest Management Program.
