GBI: Suspected Winder, Georgia, school shooter made threats before
The Georgia Bureau of Investigations said the suspected Georgia school shooter had been previously investigated for threats to commit school violence.
Four people were killed and nine people were injured at a Georgia high school after a 14-year-old boy, identified as Colt Gray, opened fire on Wednesday.
This marks the 23rd school shooting in America in 2024, according to Education Week — and the shootings in 2024 include Skyline High School in Oakland in May and Grant Union High School in Sacramento in January.
What happened in Winder, Georgia?
Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, went under lockdown on the morning of Sept. 4 when Gray opened fire in his high school, USA TODAY reported.
Teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie died, as well as 14-year-olds Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. Eight other students and one teacher were injured, according to USA TODAY.
Where is Winder, Georgia?
Winder is the county seat of Barrow County and is located northeast of Atlanta. It’s about a 50-mile drive from Georgia’s capitol, depending on the route taken, according to Google Maps.

As of Thursday, Sept. 5 morning, 23 school shootings, including the shooting at Apalachee High School, have killed or injured 49 people in 2024, according to data compiled by Education Week.

Last year, 63 people were either injured or killed in 38 school shootings, and a total of 488 people were either killed or injured in a school shooting in the last six years.
