California may be known for its beaches and mountain destinations, but it also has a stinker under its belt: San Bernardino earned the No. 1 spot on lawn care provider LawnStarter’s recent ranking of America’s dirtiest cities.
LawnStarter examined more than 300 of the nation’s largest cities based on four categories: air pollution, water quality, waste management, and resident dissatisfaction levels.
In addition to San Bernardino, Ontario also made it into the top 10 list. Other California cities are found throughout the ranking of 300 cities.
Why did San Bernardino rank No. 1 in dirtiest city list?
San Bernardino, located east of Los Angeles and with a population of 222,000, ranked No. 1 on LawnStarter’s list. According to its metrics, the city ranked No. 2 for pollution, No. 56 for living conditions, No. 207 for infrastructure, and No. 1 for resident dissatisfaction.
Further metrics show that 93.8% of residents find the city dirty and untidy, while 75% are dissatisfied with pollution (its median air quality index is 80, which is considered “moderate,” according to the Air Quality Index).
Ontario earns No. 5 spot in dirtiest city list
Another Southern California city, Ontario, made it onto the top 10 ranking.
Ontario, also east of Los Angeles and with a population of 175,000, ranked fifth in the country for pollution, 52nd for living conditions, 206th for infrastructure, and 13th for resident dissatisfaction.

Other California cities made it onto LawnStarter’s ranking. Those featured in the top 50 list include Los Angeles (No. 11), Corona (No. 13), Fresno (No. 17), Fontana (No. 23), Palmdale (No. 25), Victorville (No. 31), Riverside (No. 32), Santa Monica (No. 38), Stockton (No. 41), Bakersfield (No. 42), Glendale (No. 44) and Modesto (No. 47).
Why are so many California cities on the list?
The Inland Empire and its cities historically have suffered California’s — and the nation’s — highest rates of certain types of air pollution, because prevailing winds carry most of coastal greater LA’s huge plumes of car and truck exhaust and factory emissions inland, creating lung-scarring soot. Hot, sunshine-filled days also swirl with other vehicle and industry pollutants to create a second type of harmful pollution: ozone smog.
The potentially deadly soot has been exacerbated in recent decades by explosive growth in regional warehouses served by diesel-fueled trucks.
