Three of USA TODAY’s 10Best all-inclusive resorts in the country and one of the 10Best family resorts are within just a few hours’ drive of Fort Collins.
So, if you’re looking for a fun getaway where someone else does the cooking and cleaning and, in many cases, entertaining of your kids for a few hours at a time, you might want to give these resorts a try:
Brush Creek Ranch
Location: Saratoga, Wyoming
Distance from Fort Collins: 132 miles (U.S. Highway 287 north to Laramie, Wyoming; Wyoming Highway 130 west to the ranch)
Accommodations include the main lodge and spa and two different private homesteads, each featuring their own cabins and suites.
Brush Creek Ranch offers a bit of everything for those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives for a few days to a week or more. The original homestead, located in south central Wyoming between the Sierra Madre and Snowy Range, was established in 1884. It covers more than 30,000 acres and still serves as a working cattle ranch.
But it also provides all the amenities of a five-star resort, including spa treatments and three gourmet meals a day. The American Wagyu beef is ranch-raised; the Medicine Bow cheeses are made from a goat herd on site, aged in Brush Creek Distillery barrels; and the produce is freshly harvested from a 20,000 square-foot indoor greenhouse.
Activities include hiking, horseback riding, fly fishing and float fishing, rock climbing, ATV adventures, a ropes course, paintball, cattle drives and, in the winter, skiing and snowboarding on a private mountain, served by a heated snowcat with a catered lunch served in mountainside yurts.
Vista Verde Guest Ranch
Location: Clark, Colorado
Distance from Fort Collins: 184 miles (Colorado Highway 14 west to end at U.S. Highway 40, then 40 west through Steamboat Springs to Colorado Highway 129 north to the ranch)
Vista Verde Ranch has more staff available to assist guests in the summer months than guest themselves, with a maximum capacity of 50 from June through August. The ranch, established in 1919, sits on 600 acres surrounded by the 1.1 million-acre Routt National Forest.
Accommodations include 12 private cabins, each with a hot tub on the deck, and three lodge rooms. Vista Verde’s version of “cowboy cuisine” includes made-to-order meals, ranging from breakfast burritos and honey wheat pancakes topped with caramelized apples, to vegetable, steak and shrimp kabob lunches to three-course, candlelit dinners.
Activities vary throughout the year but include horseback riding; archery; yoga; hiking; fly fishing; mountain biking; paddle boarding; photography clinics; snowmobiling; snow tubing; skiing and snowboarding; snowshoeing; and even dog-sled excursions and massage therapy. There are numerous supervised children’s activities available, as well, except in September and October, when the resort is open only to adults. The ranch is open each year from June through October and December through March.
C Lazy U Ranch
Location: Granby, Colorado
Distance from Fort Collins: 107 miles (Interstate 25 south to U.S. Highway 34 west through Rocky Mountain National Park and Granby to Colorado Highway 125 north to ranch)
