Actor John Amos, who played football at Colorado State, dies

Actor John Amos has died.

He was 84.

Amos is best known for starring in “Good Times” and “Roots,” but did you know he once played football for Colorado State?

Amos played football at CSU in the early 1960s and occasionally returned to the sidelines to cheer on the Rams.

A story in the Fort Collins Coloradoan from 1975 documented Amos speaking at a CSU football function. At the event, Amos described his football career as “always there at the bus stop” while saying he “never quite caught the bus.”

Amos was at Hughes Stadium for the 2013 spring game and attended the Rocky Mountain Showdown the prior season.

Amos made brief stops with as many as 13 teams in five different pro leagues (including twice being cut by the Kansas City Chiefs) before ending his football pursuits.

The career change worked out, as he became an Emmy-nominated actor. Over the course of his five-decade career, Amos racked up dozens of other performances, from Major Grant in “Die Hard 2” to Cleo McDowell in the Eddie Murphy comedy “Coming to America.” He reprised the latter character in the 2021 sequel, “Coming 2 America.”

Amos died of “natural causes,” according to USA Today.
