DENVER (KDVR) — “Big Boy,” one of the world’s largest trains, is taking off on Wednesday and plans to stop in three Colorado locations while on tour.

Earlier this summer, Union Pacific Railroad announced the 1.2 million pound train’s second-ever tour: The “Heartland of America Tour.”

The history of Big Boy started with 25 trains, all 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds. The company said all are now out of service or on display, except for Big Boy No. 4014, which ran in 1941 and retired after 20 years and over a million miles.

However, after a lengthy restoration, the company said the train is now the world’s largest operating steam locomotive and is on track for its second tour across the country.

During its eight-week tour, the train will pass through many states, and finally, the train’s stops are announced on the Union Pacific Steam Schedule.

“Big Boy” to stop in 3 Colorado locations

Big Boy sets out from Cheyenne, Wyoming on Wednesday and heads through states like Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Montana, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas before stopping in Colorado.

The train will leave from Sharon Springs, Kansas and head to Denver on Oct. 21. It’s set to arrive in Strasburg at 3:45 p.m. and leave from Monroe St. Crossing at 4:15 p.m.

Then, on Oct. 22 the train will arrive in Denver for an employee event. While the train will be in the Mile High City, the schedule says there is no public access on Oct. 22. The train will stay in Denver until Oct. 23, which is when it leaves at 9 a.m. on its way back to Cheyenne.

The train will make one more stop on its way out. It’s set to arrive in Greeley at 12:35 p.m. and depart from 10th St. Crossing at 1:05 p.m. on Oct. 23.

Be sure to check the schedule periodically as the website said the times and locations are subject to change. The full train schedule and where it’s on display can be found on the Union Pacific Steam Schedule.
