Nearly 40,000 federal government workers in Colorado are set to receive a raise after President Joe Biden signed off on a 2% pay increase for most federal employees last week.
The president’s executive order calls for a 2% pay increase for most civilian federal employees starting in January 2025. The raise is part of set increases proposed throughout the year, according to the Federal News Network.
Because the 2% increase is an average and actual raises will be determined by location, some federal employees will see slightly less or more than a 2% raise.
The federal government employs more than 2 million civilians who live and work in every stateand U.S. territory, according to the Congressional Research Service.
How many federal employees are in Colorado?
There were 39,910 federal civilian employees in Colorado as of March 31, 2024, according to the Congressional Research Service; an estimated 10,142 of those employees reside in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, which encompasses Pueblo County, the Western Slope and most of southern Colorado.
Earlier this year, a pay raise of 5.2% on average was given to federal employees, making it the largest increase in 40 years, according to USA Today.
The Office of Personnel Management told the Federal News Network that the 2% pay raise “recognizes the federal workforce’s dedication and service to the American people and positions the federal government to better compete in the labor market to attract and retain a well-qualified federal workforce while accounting for the fiscal constraints federal agencies face in fiscal 2025,” USA Today reported.
What raise will Colorado military members get?
Another pay increase of 4.5% was given to military members as part of the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, which affects even more Colorado families.
Military OneSource, a website operated by the Department of Defense, shows Colorado had 39,647 active-duty service members as of Dec. 31, 2023, as well as 24,194 National Guard and reserve members.
In addition to basic pay increases for members of the U.S. Armed Forces in the $895 billion defense policy bill, the “Servicemember Quality of Life Improvement and National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2025,” signed into law by Biden on Dec. 23, authorizes appropriations for Department of Defense programs and military construction, Department of Energy national security programs, Intelligence programs, and Department of State programs.
“This bill provides vital benefits for military personnel and their families, and includes critical authorities to support our country’s national defense, foreign affairs, and homeland security,” Biden said in a White House news release announcing the bill had been signed into law.
