Colorado Governor praises Trump's appointment of Kennedy | News

Gov. Jared Polis said he is “excited” by the news that President-elect Donald Trump will appoint Robert Kennedy, Jr. to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, suggesting the latter would be ally when it comes to advocating for several issues.

“He helped us defeat vaccine mandates in Colorado in 2019 and will help make America healthy again by shaking up HHS and FDA,” Polis said, adding he hopes Kennedy will “lean into personal choice on vaccines rather than bans (which I think are terrible, just like mandates).”

“But what I’m most optimistic about is taking on big pharma and the corporate ag oligopoly to improve our health,” Polis added in a tweet on Thursday.

“He will face strong special interest opposition on these, but I look forward to partnering with him to truly make America healthy again and I hope that we can finally make progress on these important issues,” the governor said.

The governor effectively urged people to withhold judgment on Kennedy.

“Before you mock him or disagree, I want to share with you some quotes that if he follows through show why I’m excited,” the governor said.

He listed several quotes from Kennedy about capping prescription drug costs to companies cannot charge Americans more than what Europeans pay; eliminating the FDA’s nutrition department and others that are “not doing their job” and “not protecting our kids”; and, reducing the use of pesticides in agriculture.

Polis said he agrees with Kennedy on these issues.

He noted that Colorado has an application before the FDA to import low-cost prescription drugs from Canada and that the state just needs the federal agency’s approval.

As for the “nutrition game,” that has dominated by “big corporate ag rather than human health and they do more harm than good,” Polis said.

The massive Cabinet agency oversees everything from drug, vaccine and food safety to medical research and the social safety net programs Medicare and Medicaid. Trump said before the election he would give Kennedy free rein over health policy.
