Colorado school employee fired after calling US 'greatest country,' lawsuit says

GREENWOOD VILLIAGE, Colo. (CITC) — Legal group America First Legal on Thursday announced it is suing a Colorado school district for retaliating against an employee who expressed views about the U.S. during a diversity training.

The Cherry Creek School District allegedly violated the employee’s First Amendment rights when it “pressured him to embrace race-based ideologies” through a required diversity training. The employee during that training allegedly responded to a question about being White by saying he "identifies as an American who believes the U.S. is the greatest country in the world."

Cherry Creek’s equity director allegedly reported these comments to the school principal as having “racist undertones.” The district later eliminated the employee's position, citing “budgetary reasons,” America First Legal claims.

The school also put the teacher on administrative leave for “unprofessional conduct” after he expressed disbelief over the school’s justification for the elimination, according to the lawsuit.

“As alleged in the complaint, Cherry Creek School District blatantly violated the First Amendment rights of our client when they terminated him because his pride in the United States of America did not align with the district’s political ideology that America is a systemically racist nation,” America First Legal Senior Advisor Ian Prior wrote. “Like other school districts across the country, Cherry Creek has replaced the Bill of Rights with the ‘DEI Manifesto,’ and teachers, students, and parents are being silenced for standing up for the values that make America great.”

We are proud to stand up for all teachers across America who are being unfairly persecuted for daring to challenge a government-sponsored orthodoxy that teaches hatred of America and seeks to marginalize people based on their viewpoints and the color of their skin,” he added. The Cherry Creek School District did not respond to a request for comment from Crisis in the Classroom sent via email Thursday.
