DENVER (KDVR) — Flags will fly at half-staff in Colorado from sunrise to sunset for 30 days.

On Monday, Gov. Jared Polis, as directed by President Joe Biden, ordered all American and Colorado flags to fly half-staff from the start of former President Jimmy Carter’s passing on Sunday.

State funeral for Jimmy Carter will be Jan. 9

According to a proclamation signed by then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954, because Carter was a former president, flags are to remain at half-staff for 30 days from the day of Carter’s death.

This is the longest period possible for the flags to fly at half-staff, reserved for the death of the sitting president or former presidents, per the proclamation.

“Today, as America begins to mourn the death of Former President Jimmy Carter, I encourage Coloradans to join in honoring his 100 remarkable years of life, service, and leadership. we must continue to further the ideals that Former President Carter believed in, including deep compassion and protecting human rights and dignity,” said Polis.

Carter, the 39th president of the United States, died “peacefully” in his Georgia home Sunday. He was 100 years old.

A National Day of Mourning will occur on Jan. 9, according to Biden, to honor the life and service of Carter.

“President Carter was a man of character, courage, and compassion, whose lifetime of service defined him as one of the most influential statesmen in our history.  He embodied the very best of America:  A humble servant of God and the people.  A heroic champion of global peace and human rights, and an honorable leader whose moral clarity and hopeful vision lifted our Nation and changed our world,” said Biden in a proclamation to the United States.

Aside from Polis, other Colorado legislators took the time to remember Carter’s legacy. U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper and Colorado Democratic party chair Shad Murib all shared statements.
