As the countdown to the Nov. 5 election begins, Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley is preparing to host a special event featuring New York Times best-selling author Dr. Richard Haass.

The event, titled “Rediscovering Common Ground”, will take place from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the CMC Spring Valley campus, where Haass will discuss his book, “The Bill of Obligations: Ten Habits of Good Citizens.”

A diplomat, historian, author, editor, and former president of the nonpartisan Council on Foreign Relations, where he served as leader from 2003-2023, Haass has worked in the Pentagon, State Department, and White House, serving under both Democratic and Republican presidents.

Haass’ book, chosen as the college’s Common Reader for 2024, delves into the current state of civil discourse in the United States and offers 10 habits that individuals can practice to help heal societal divides. As president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, Haass has decades of experience advising leaders across the political spectrum, serving in key positions under both Republican and Democratic presidents.

Released in January 2023, The novel has garnered significant attention, with Haass appearing on platforms such as CNN, The New York Times, and PBS News Hour to discuss the challenges facing American democracy. His upcoming talk at Spring Valley is one of six scheduled at various Colorado Mountain College campuses during mid-October.

During a January interview on “Good Morning America”, Haass shared his growing concern about the divisions within the country, explaining that these internal conflicts are becoming a more pressing worry than external threats.
