National Weather Service working to change maps, websites to reflect name change
2024 hurricane season shatters records
AccuWeather hurricane experts predicted a supercharged 2024 season. What arrived was a deadly, explosive and historic year. Here’s a look back.
If President Trump’s order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America doesn’t feel real yet, maybe this will make it hit home since it’s … well … close to home.
The National Hurricane Center has changed its website and maps to show Gulf of America.
The Gulf of Mexico, now the Gulf of America, is a body of water surrounded by five states; Florida being one of them.

The warm waters help developing tropical cyclones form and, in the case of some, intensify rapidly, giving residents in their path little time to prepare or evacuate.
National Hurricane Center website, maps show Gulf of America
While most Florida residents, not counting meteorologists, generally don’t compulsively check the National Hurricane’s website outside of the Atlantic hurricane season, those who did Thursday, Feb. 13, were quick to spot the change.
On its map, the National Hurricane Center now shows the Gulf of America.
The text underneath specifies the areas covered by the Atlantic basin: which are the Atlantic Ocean north of the equator, the Caribbean Sea, and now, the Gulf of America.
National Weather Service also updating maps, websites to show Gulf of America
In a notification sent out Thursday, Feb. 13, the National Weather Service said it was “in the process of implementing Executive Order 14172, “Restoring Names that Honor American Greatness.”
“Work is underway to update naming conventions as quickly as possible on online maps, weather products, websites and other materials across the NWS. Caution will be exercised to avoid disruptions to operations,” the NWS said.
“Users may notice a phased implementation of these changes as the agency works to update all products, services, and documentation with the utmost expediency.”
When was the name changed to Gulf of America?
On Saturday, Feb. 9, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum announced the name had officially been changed from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
“It’s official! Congratulations @POTUS on the Gulf of America! @Interior has implemented your instruction from the Executive Order on Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness. Another big win for President Trump’s agenda to Make America Great Again,” Burgum posted on X.
Why was the name changed to Gulf of America?
Trump said Jan. 7 at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida he wanted to make the name change because of what he called a trade imbalance with Mexico, illegal immigration into the U.S. at the southern border and concerns about drugs coming into the United States.
“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring that covers a lot of territory, the Gulf of America.
“What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate. It’s appropriate,” Trump said.
In US, it’s Gulf of America. Outside of US, users will see both names on Google Maps
The name change to Gulf of America on Google Maps is visible only in the U.S.
Outside of the U.S., users see both the Gulf of Mexico and Gulf of America.
International practice is to use whatever place name is preferred by the country a specific geographic feature belongs to, but the Gulf touches Mexico, the United States, Cuba and several other island nations.
When is the Atlantic hurricane season?
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30.
What is the forecast for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season?
Early predictions for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season haven’t been released yet. Those generally come out between March and May.
AccuWeather, Colorado State University and the National Hurricane Center all release predictions for what the approaching season will bring.
