Shedeur Sanders somehow managed to stay cool, calm and collected while answering a question about the American flag during Saturday’s postgame press conference. A dominant comeback win over Texas Tech probably helped him to suppress his frustration with a supposed controversy that hovered over the Colorado football program throughout the entire week.
He tore the false narrative to shreds.
The Red Raiders hold their annual ‘Celebrate America’ game on the Saturday prior to Veteran’s Day weekend. It always features a special game day t-shirt, sold only by Red Raider Outfitter, a local store in Lubbock that offers “the largest and most exclusive collection of Texas Tech merch.” All of the proceeds are donated to a local initiative called ‘Monument of Courage,’ which helps give back to military veterans.

Does Colorado hate America?!
According to Stephen Spiegelberg, owner of Red Raider Outfitter, Texas Tech’s athletic department immediately approved this year’s design request. Colorado reportedly responded back with just two words: “not interested.”
Spiegelberg went back to the drawing board. He later reached back out with a new design and was rejected for a second time.

We decided we would not be selling any type of Colorado merchandise in the store with the logo. We refuse to do that because Colorado would receive financial benefit from those shirts. And we don’t think that anybody has the right to limit the use of the American flag in this great nation.

A university spokesperson offered clarification on behalf of the Buffaloes on Thursday. The denial had nothing to do with Spiegelberg, Red Raider Outfitter, or Texas Tech. It has nothing to do with the flag.
We get requests to use our marks and often decline for any number of reasons. In this case, the decision was unrelated to the ‘Celebrate America’ theme. Our standards are consistently applied and are based on widely accepted licensing and trademark best practices used by national and global brands.

Despite the reasoning for the decision, Colorado was the target of criticism in the 72/96 hours leading up to kickoff. The narrative was spun to make it seem like Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes hate the United States of America. Players were labeled as a bunch of Benedict Arnolds who are ungrateful for the country in which they live, even though they had nothing to do with the t-shirt.
Shedeur Sanders put that chatter to bed with a fiery rebuttal after a 41-27 victory on Saturday.

Well, that settles that! The Buffaloes are tired of the negative conversations surrounding their program but they are not going to let it get to them. Onto the next one.
