Former senior Trump advisor Steve Bannon is slated to headline the Colorado Republican Party’s annual fundraising dinner in March, five months after the popular podcaster’s release from federal prison, the state GOP announced Thursday.
An architect of Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign for president and the longtime host of the “War Room” podcast, the 71-year-old Bannon pleaded guilty last week in New York to a state fraud charge stemming from a multi-million dollar fundraising effort to build a wall along the country’s southern border, in a deal that avoids jail time.
Trump pardoned Bannon on related federal charges before leaving office in January 2021, but three others indicted along with Bannon in the We Build the Wall scheme — including a Colorado man — were found guilty and sentenced to prison.
Bannon served a four-month sentence in a federal prison in Connecticut last year for contempt of Congress after refusing to cooperate with a congressional investigation into the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
“The Republican Party is the steadfast guardian of American values, championing freedom, prosperity, and national strength,” the Colorado GOP said in a “save the date” email announcing Bannon’s appearance at the March 28 Centennial Dinner.
Dubbed “A Golden Age,” the gala is being pitched as a chance to “honor the bold leaders and patriots fighting to preserve our Republic, rooted in the principles of America First as championed by President Donald J. Trump,” the announcement said.
A party spokeswoman told Colorado Politics that the banquet’s location and other details will be announced soon. She added that it will likely be held at the Denver Tech Center.
Traditionally the Colorado GOP’s largest fundraiser, the dinner falls on the eve of the state party’s biennial reorganization meeting, scheduled for March 29 at a church in Castle Rock.
This year’s reorg is taking place amid a pitched battle for control of the state GOP, following an attempt last year to remove state chairman Dave Williams from his position. Last week, Williams, the state party and his fellow party officers sued six of the Republicans involved in organizing the unsuccessful recall, seeking unspecified damages.
Calling Bannon “a key strategist and unapologetic patriot,” the state Republican Party said the keynoter “has ignited a grassroots uprising, leading the fight to reclaim America from the globalist elite and defending our freedoms.”
The party also praised Bannon as “a fierce champion for Tina Peters (who) has stood strong in her defense, recognizing the importance of integrity in our elections.”
Peters, a former Mesa County clerk, was sentenced last summer to nine years in prison for her role in a scheme that involved tampering with her county’s voting equipment.
Colorado Republicans didn’t hold a Centennial Dinner last year. The 2023 dinner’s keynoter was Arizona Republican Kari Lake, who was appointed by Trump as director of Voice of America after two unsuccessful runs as the GOP nominee for governor and U.S. senator. Another Arizonan, U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs, headlined the 2022 Centennial Dinner.
