Are you tired of polarized politics? Want to learn how to have healthier discussions about complicated issues? Especially so close to a consequential election?
Join Rocky Mountain PBS, Colorado College’s Journalism Institute, the Center for Public Deliberation, and CC student media on Monday, Oct. 21 at 5:30 p.m. for a screening of the film “Undivide Us” followed by small-group discussions focused on how to foster healthier conversations about tough topics that can sometimes lead to tune-out or toxicity. What: About the film: “As news and social media amplify a narrative of an America on the brink of civil war, politicians in Washington, DC stir conflict: red against blue, rich against poor, urban against rural, race against race, and man against woman. They cast us as enemies locked in battle, usurping power and posing as our saviors. UNDIVIDE US challenges the idea that citizens who disagree are not capable of civil conversation and demonstrates the truth that, even in our differences, the American experiment is still alive and well.”
After the one-hour film, Martín Carcasson, founder of the Center for Public Deliberation at CSU Fort Collins, and Amber Coté of Rocky Mountain PBS, will guide an hour of small-group discussions of the film and its themes. We’ll use a Living Room Conversations model that “offers a simple, structured way to communicate across differences while building understanding and relationships,” followed by a share-out to the full group.
