US election latest: First polls close - but voting extended in key state after bomb threats | US News

All eyes are rightly on the presidential election taking place today, but there is another huge election under way that will determine how effective the next president will be.

The House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the US Congress, is also up for election, as it is every two years – and the winning presidential candidate will want their party to control the chamber to be able to pass their legislation.

The head of the House Democrats’ campaign operation has been speaking to media this afternoon, and said that it could take a week or more until the final result – and therefore, the balance of power – is officially determined.

Representative Suzan DelBene told Sky’s US partner network NBC News that with more voters choosing to cast their ballots by mail, the final result could take as long to be declared as the midterms in 2022 – which took eight days.

In 2022, Republicans won the House by about just 6,675 votes, which were the results of the five closest races.

Some of those contests were decided by less than 1,000 votes.
