Driving in the snow in Colorado: Tips for safe winter driving

Colorado roads can become treacherous quickly during a snowstorm. We’ve gathered some winter driving tips from AAA Exchange to help keep you safe.

Three Colorado mountain towns, all with nearby ski resorts, were among the 10 best destinations for snow selected by readers in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards for 2024.

Frisco — in the heart of Summit County, which is home to four ski resorts: Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain and Keystone — was No. 6 on the list. Winter Park was No. 7 and Aspen No. 9.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula topped the list.

The USA TODAY 10Best Readers Choice Awards highlight the very best in travel, food and drink, and lifestyle. Nominees are selected by a panel of industry experts, then vetted by editors who select a final set of nominees to be presented to the voting public for a period of four weeks.

Frisco, founded as a result of Colorado’s Silver Boom, has become more than just a highway exit off Interstate 70 for skiers and snowboards headed to nearby Breckenridge Ski Resort. It has plenty of its own attractions now, including multiple hotels and a tubing hill area at Frisco Adventure Park. Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain and Keystone and their world-class ski slopes are just a short drive away.

Winter Park, the town just west of the popular ski resort of the same name along U.S. Highway 40 on the west side of Berthoud Pass, has also changed significantly in recent years while becoming a tourist destination in its own right. Besides skiing and snowboarding on the runs just outside of town at Winter Park Ski Resort, there’s also plenty of coffee shops, restaurants, bars and shops to explore when the lifts shut down for the day or for those who don’t ski. There are plenty of nearby trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, as well as hills for sledding and tubing.

For those seeking a little more glamour in their winter vacations, Aspen has got you covered. Not only does it have four top-notch ski mountains to choose among — Aspen Highlands, Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk and Snowmass — it’s also got plenty of glitzy hotels, restaurants, shops and nightspots that draw crowds throughout the year.
