Republican leaders in Cumberland County say they’re excited that Donald Trump is set to become the 47th president of the United States and condemned Democratic leaders who they say push fearful narratives.
Laura Mussler, vice president of the Fayetteville Republican Women’s Club and co-founder of the Republican Candidates Resource Center, said that no matter the outcome of the election, her organization would continue to support and promote the Republican party.
We also talked to people who are worried about a second Trump presidency. See that story here.
“The idea is to bring in everybody. We’re all Americans first,” Mussler said. “We live in a blue county, 100% blue county. As you can see, the blue county isn’t doing very well. Hopefully, people will open their eyes and see that Republicans are not the enemy. We believe in small government and minding our own business for the most part.”
Vice President Kamala Harris won 77,254 to Trump’s 59,116, according to unofficial results on the North Carolina State Board of Elections website.
Mussler said she doesn’t expect Trump’s presidency to have much of an impact in Cumberland County. She said there are important county elections residents should be more concerned with.
“I think our local elections are way more important than the presidency,” Mussler said. “Our Constitution was created so that we have 50 individual states. They’re the governments that make the difference on our day-to-day lives.”
Mussler said that fearmongering from the Democratic Party and the media is irrational, and people need to have faith in Americans supporting each other.
“I think (Democrats) are dealing in fear, unfortunately. President Trump isn’t coming and knocking on your door to find out if you’re gay or not and kicking people out of the country. President Trump believes in ‘live your life with less government oversight,'” Mussler said. “He’s not against anybody, he’s for America, and what is so wrong with ‘Make America Great Again?’ I can’t think of a negative to that. We’re Americans first.”
‘We’re all in this together’
Shamike Bethea, president of the Cumberland County Republican Women’s Club, said the media is to blame for heightened fears among Democratic voters.
“I think they’re false fears,” Bethea said. “The simple formula, turn off the TV. Turn off the negativity because we’re all in this together.”
Bethea said a second Trump presidency will be a relief.
“It looks like we’ll be getting back to normal, and what normal means: our economy being rebuilt. I think that was one of the biggest issues that we were looking at up under the Biden administration,” Bethea said. “We know that it’s not going to happen overnight, but that hope is there that we can get back to some of the normal things, but not just the normal of what it was, but improving.”
Bethea said she expects Trump to cut government spending. She said that she hopes that the newly elected members of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners will help cut spending on a local level.
“I think we’re going to see some major cuts coming through just so we can get back in budget,” Bethea said. “Locally, we’re looking at another tax increase coming up soon on property taxes. I think where we’re at economically, that’s going to hurt a lot of people. Hopefully, with the new county commissioners that are coming in from our local elections, they’ll be able to persuade the board to start looking at Cumberland County as a whole and make the adjustments needed just so the residents can try to build their finances back up, as well.”
Nina Morton, Cumberland County Republican Party Chairwoman, said via email Friday that she is excited and grateful for Republican support after Trump’s election night victory.
“The Cumberland County Executive Board is ecstatic about President Trump winning! He emerged victorious thanks to the unwavering support of loyal, full-time RED Republicans who stood and fought with him! He’s a winner!” Morton said. “For all of you who didn’t want to stand under our red tents and fly your Trump flags, here you go. He won anyway! Be proud of who you are and what you represent. Always be courageous and stand firm. We are Americans, taking our country back. God bless America!”
Morton did not respond to questions about Democratic leaders’ and advocacy groups’ fears of a second Trump’s presidency.
