BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Name changes will soon be coming to several maps across the state of Florida.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said it will implement a “Gulf of America” name change to all of its Commission materials.
In a media release on Thursday, FWC said it will support President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14172, which calls for the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. All commission materials, documents, maps, forms, and resources will reflect the change.
FWC said the changes would apply to offices and programs that directly involve the Gulf of America, including the Division of Marine Fisheries Management, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, Division of Law Enforcement and the Boating and Waterways Section within the Division of Law Enforcement across the state of Florida.
Earlier this month, Google Maps replaced the Gulf of Mexico with the Gulf of America.
The White House posted about the change on Google Maps on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter.
After taking office, President Donald Trump ordered that the water bordered by the Southern United States, Mexico and Cuba be renamed to the Gulf of America. He also ordered America’s highest mountain peak be changed back to Mt. McKinley.
“We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources,” Google said in a post on X.
The company said that Maps will reflect any updates to the Geographic Names Information System, a database of more than 1 million geographic features in the United States.
On Wednesday, State Sen. Joe Gruters, R- Sarasota filed legislation to rename Tamiami Trail to Gulf of America Trail.
SB 1058 calls for the name change to be implemented in Miami-Dade County, Collier County, Charlotte County, Sarasota County, Manatee County and Hillsborough County.
The bill would also require district school boards and charter school governing boards to implement the name change in educational materials.
If passed, the change would take effect on July 1, 2025.
