New USMNT coach shares philosophy for making team a contender in 2026 World Cup

Mauricio Pochettino has a lot of work to do to turn around the U.S. Men’s National Team before America hosts the 2026 World Cup. “Poch” walks us through his plans.

The U.S. men’s national soccer team enters one of its more anticipated international windows in recent years when it hosts Panama on Saturday and then faces rival Mexico outside Guadalajara on Tuesday.

The games mark the debut of new coach Mauricio Pochettino, who brings a wealth of coaching experience to the program. Pochettino replaces former coach Gregg Berhalter, who was fired after the USMNT was unceremoniously bounced following a disappointing performance in Copa America 2024.

Pochettino was announced as the new USMNT coach on Sept. 10 and has less than two years to turn around the team for the 2026 World Cup following the Copa America debacle. That journey starts Saturday when Pochettino’s roster of mostly familiar faces takes on Panama.

This will be a sort of a Concacaf baptism by fire for Pochettino. Panama delivered a near fate-sealing defeat to the U.S. in the Copa America. Mexico is the USMNT’s primary rival, with the U.S. and Mexico playing their first friendly in Mexico since 2012. While the USMNT hasn’t lost to Mexico on U.S. soil since 2019, it has just one victory in Mexico, which came in that 2012 friendly.
