Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has suggested renaming the southern United States “Mexican America” in response to US President-elect Donald Trump’s proposal to change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
Sheinbaum made the joke at her daily press conference on Wednesday, referencing how the name appeared on world maps in the 17th century.
She remarked: “Why don’t we call it Mexican America? Sounds good, doesn’t it?”
The previous day, Trump had described his Gulf of America proposal as having “a beautiful ring.”
Until the Mexican-American War in the 19th century, current US states such as California, Arizona and Texas were part of Mexico.
The name Gulf of Mexico for the body of water off the southern coast of the US and eastern coast of Mexico has been in use since the 16th century.
Left-wing politician and climate expert Sheinbaum became Mexico’s first female president in October.
Her predecessor and political mentor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, was president during Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2021. Despite Trump’s threats of punitive tariffs against Mexico and tensions surrounding migration, Sheinbaum’s predecessor maintained a fairly good relationship with him.
Trump will be sworn in as US president for the second time on January 20.
