LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A national gun violence memorial will be placed in the smallest town in the United States.
The One In Five Foundation For Kids selected Monowi, Nebraska, on Tuesday as the host of a memorial to the more than 500 students killed in school shootings since 1999.
It was the first memorial announced of 15 planned nationwide.
Monowi sits in north-central Nebraska near the South Dakota border and has a population of one.
One In Five said Monowi’s central location makes it the perfect place for a memorial.
“The county and Monowi itself, sit in the heart and direct geographic center of this nation,” founder Daniel Chapin said in a press release. “As such, we cannot think of a better location to truly memorialize those lost in the tragedy of school gun violence across this country than Monowi.”
Chapin also said Monowi’s lone resident — 87-year-old Elsie Eiler — serves as an example of the resilience required in the fight against gun violence.
“Elsie has kept the smallest city in America alive,” he said. “1 person — No matter where, can make a difference.”
