The United States men’s national team will look to qualify for the knockout stage of Copa America 2024 when it takes on Panama in the second group stage match of the competition. USA is coming off a 2-0 win over Bolivia which featured some sloppy play but the team was able to get the job done. Panama defended admirably against Uruguay for a half, though that wasn’t enough as the floodgates ultimately open in a 3-0 defeat. A loss for Panama means elimination, so it will be fighting hard in this contest.

There’s going to be a lot of complaining about how the Americans went about their business against Bolivia, and that’s not entirely baseless. Christian Pulisic’s goal took some favorable deflections, and Folarin Balogun had too much time to line up his strike for the second goal. There was no pressure after that, though the United States thankfully didn’t get into a foul game with Bolivia. Supporters will be looking for a better performance against a decent Panama side fighting for its life.
Even though there are no injuries on both sides, the United States will have to monitor the work levels for Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie. Adams was clearly not 100% in the Bolivia game, and McKennie appeared to be playing through a hamstring issue before being subbed out. Neither player has been ruled out but we might see a limited workload from both midfielders.
Sometimes, it takes a minute or 90 to get into the flow of things after a long break. Perhaps there were some nerves playing in a major competition as the host country. Pulisic scored early enough to give USA some breathing room and Bolivia isn’t talented enough to take advantage of underwhelming play. A desperate Panama team is a different story. However, I still think the Americans come out on top in this contest with a much more thorough showing. They’ve seen the criticism and will respond to secure a place in the knockout stage.
