Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho is a Copa America champion, after his Argentina side beat Colombia in the final.
Alejandro Garnacho was an unused substitute in the final, with his Manchester United teammate Lisandro Martinez starting in the extra-time win.
Garnacho did feature earlier in the Copa America, playing his part in his team’s third major tournament win in a row.
This was Garnacho’s first international tournament, he has six appearances for his country in total, including two starts.

Alejandro Garnacho was a Spain youth international when he signed for Manchester United back in 2020.
The Madrid born talent left Atletico to join Manchester United, following in the path of his idol Cristiano Ronaldo, who he later played alongside.
In 2022, Garnacho was called into an Argentina squad for the first time. He qualified through his Argentine mother, and is immensely proud.
After winning the FA Cup at the end of last season, Garnacho draped himself in an Argentine flag, just like he did when he won the FA Youth Cup with Manchester United.
Yet his Spanish heritage remains a talking point in Argentina. And in Spain, Garnacho’s recently developed ‘Argentine accent’ caused a stir.
After Argentina’s victory over Colombia, spirits were high. Garnacho was thrilled to celebrate his first international win, even if he was on the fringes of the side.
According to Argentine outlet La Nacion, Garnacho was made to feel involved after the win by Nicolas Otamendi, who sought him out, and chanted ‘Come on, Garnacho, Garnacho’.
Teammate Nicolas Gonzalez then made the remark, “You are celebrating that Spain won the championship.”
This was in reference to Spain’s Euro 2024 win, achieved just hours before Argentina’s Copa America triumph.
Garnacho is said to have responded simply by performing ‘a peculiar dance’, which made his teammates laugh.
Garnacho is fitting in
This jibe aside, Garnacho has been welcomed into the Argentina squad, with Lisandro Martinez in particular looking out for him.
Garnacho reached out to congratulate Lionel Messi on social media after the win. He might yet play alongside him at World Cup 2026.
The Manchester United winger is a big part of Argentina’s future, and this tournament lays the foundation for future success. Garnacho is even the most valuable Argentine teenager since Lionel Messi.
These celebrations will live with Garnacho forever – but he will hope they are the first of many with his country.
