Soup season is here! As you gear up for colder temperatures by breaking out the fuzzy sweaters and cozy socks, don’t forget to stock up on some of your favorite soups.
According to the folks at Instacart, November is peak soup season, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start making some of the best soup recipes right now. In fact, between October through February, Instacart says that chicken noodle soup was the #1 most purchased soup in the country.
While that might come as no surprise, following close behind was cream of chicken and cream of mushroom—two soups that can be used as the basis for many comfort food recipes. (Did you know Ree Drummond’s famous Chicken Spaghetti starts with a can of cream of mushroom soup?) Of course, there are tons of other soup varieties to choose from, including classic potato soup, cheeseburger soup, or even a taco soup that’s cowboy-approved! If you ask Ree, it can be hard to pick a favorite one. “Soups are like children that way,” she says. 😂
Then again, depending on where you live in the United States, you might just have a preference for the best type of soup. One look at this map from Instacart and you’ll see which soups stand out as uniquely popular in every state. The data is based on which canned soups were purchased more often compared to the national average. So, let’s take a look at these soup-er interesting highlights:
Instacart
According to the map, Ree’s home state of Oklahoma prefers cream of chicken, along with many of the Southern and Midwestern states. Though states like Texas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, and Iowa prefer cream of mushroom soup.
In the northeast and California, chicken noodle is a popular choice, but you’ll also see Italian wedding soup in New York and tomato soup in Vermont and Pennsylvania (along with Washington, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado). Out towards the west, chicken and rice is a popular choice in New Mexico and in a surprising turn of events, New England clam chowder didn’t rank in New England at all! Instead, it’s a popular soup for Idaho, Nevada, and Arizona. Let’s not forget about bean soup in the southern state of Florida!
As you can see, the type of soup you like best might depend on where you live, but one thing remains true across the country—they’re all comforting! Do you agree with your state’s pick? Shout out in the comments!
