Spurs fans may have had no players to watch in the EURO 2024 final, but those who watched the Copa America final would have been treated to some pretty impressive Spurs performances. Not only did Cristian Romero keep a clean sheet in one of the most important games of his life, but a forgotten about Tottenham player came off the bench to win the game.
Giovani Lo Celso, who is linked with a move away from Tottenham this summer, came off the bench to assist the winner for Lautaro Martinez in the Copa America final. In extra time, when the game was tied between Argentina and Colombia, Gioveni Lo Celso provided a match-winning through ball to Martinez, taking several Colombian defenders out of the equation to win the match.
In many ways, this was a perfect situation for Tottenham. The decision seems pretty unanimous that Giovani Lo Celso will be sold this summer. If there were any arguments about keeping him on board, they were rendered as redundant given that the midfielder only started only four matches in the league last season.
It is quite clear that Ange Postecoglou does not include Giovani Lo Celso in his long-term plans at Tottenham. In many ways, this is a good sign, considering the Aussie boss did not hold any sentimentality towards these players when he arrived in 2023, so he was bound to make some controversial calls which would better the club going forward.
Giovani Lo Celso should now receive some suitors. After all, he proved his quality on the world stage last night, by providing an assist to save his country. He is a creative midfielder who is unfortunately surplus to requirements at Tottenham. Hopefully, Daniel Levy and co can now negotiate a better deal for Tottenham and there will be no hard feelings when he leaves.
What is your favourite memory of Giovani Lo Celso in a Tottenham shirt?
