These debates are all about memes – moments which go viral online.
They can be good and bad.
Right now, an hour and twenty minutes in, it is a Walz slip of the tongue which is going viral: a five-second clip where he says “I’ve become friends with school shooters.”
The fuller clip shows it’s an odd, unfortunate slip.
“You previously opposed an assault weapons ban, and only later in your political career did you change your position. Why?” he was asked by the moderator.
His answer: “Yeah, I sat in that office with the Sandy Hook (2012 mass shooting) parents. I have become friends with school shooters. I’ve seen it.” he said.
Clearly, he meant to say, “I have become friends with school shooter victims.”
Still, the meme is out there.
Both camps will be pleased over policy talk
That being said, both camps will be happy with what they’ve seen so far.
Walz is trying to talk to people in their living rooms and he is talking policy – something his presidential running mate, Kamala Harris, has been accused of avoiding.
Vance too is talking policy – a relief for the policy wonks within the Trump campaign, who have been tearing their hair out at the former president’s inability to stick to the message.
